01 · Homepage
Get the basics right.
These are the points Google looks at first.
-
My homepage has a clear H1 heading with my main keyword
The H1 tells Google and your visitor straight away what your page is about.
Urgent
-
My meta title is set (max. 60 characters, contains my keyword)
This is the clickable blue text people see on Google.
Urgent
-
My meta description is written (max. 155 characters, with a clear CTA)
A good meta description makes it more likely that people click through.
Urgent
-
All images on my homepage have alt text
Google can't "see" images, the alt text describes them.
Important
-
My name/business name, address and phone number are on the website
Local SEO requires consistent NAP details (Name, Address, Phone).
Important
02 · Page speed & technical
Fast loading = better ranking.
A slow site loses you out on two fronts: visitors drop off and Google ranks you lower.
-
My website loads within 3 seconds (tested via pagespeed.web.dev)
53% of mobile visitors leave a page if it takes longer than 3 seconds to load.
Urgent
-
My website has an SSL certificate (URL starts with https://)
Without HTTPS, Chrome marks your site as not secure, and so does Google.
Urgent
-
My website is fully mobile-friendly (tested on a phone)
Google primarily indexes the mobile version of your site.
Urgent
-
Images are compressed (under 200KB per image)
Large images are the #1 reason for slow loading times.
Important
-
There are no broken links on my website (404 errors)
Dead links frustrate visitors and are a negative SEO signal.
Recommended
03 · Content & copy
Write for people,
optimise for Google.
Good content is the foundation of lasting SEO.
-
Every service or product page has a unique primary keyword
One page = one keyword. Multiple keywords compete with each other.
Urgent
-
My keyword is in the first paragraph of every page
Google gives the first paragraph more weight than the rest of the text.
Important
-
My service pages contain at least 300 words of text
Thin pages rank poorly, Google wants proof that you're an expert.
Important
-
I use subheadings (H2/H3) to make my copy easy to scan
Headings help readers and Google understand the structure of your page.
Important
-
My website has a blog or knowledge base with at least 3 articles
Fresh content is a signal that your website is active and relevant.
Recommended
✨
Quick win: No blog yet? Write one article of 500+ words about the question your customers ask most. That's enough to get started.
04 · Local SEO
Getting found
in your area.
Do you work locally? Then these are the most valuable points on the whole list.
-
I have a fully completed Google Business Profile
This is the #1 way to appear in local search results and Maps.
Urgent
-
My Google Business Profile has at least 10 recent reviews
Reviews are one of the strongest signals for local rankings.
Urgent
-
My town or city is on the relevant pages of my website
E.g. "photographer Utrecht", so Google can link you to your location.
Important
-
I reply to all Google reviews (including the negative ones)
Replying to reviews shows engagement and improves your local score.
Recommended
-
My business is listed in local directories (Yelp, local business guides, etc.)
Consistent listings in several places strengthen your local authority.
Recommended
05 · Google & measuring
Know what works.
You can only improve what you measure. These tools are free and essential.
-
My website is set up in Google Search Console
Search Console shows which keywords you're found for and which errors Google sees.
Urgent
-
My sitemap has been submitted to Google Search Console
A sitemap helps Google find and index all the pages on your site.
Important
-
I have Google Analytics (or an alternative) installed
Without analytics you're flying blind, you don't know who visits your site or how.
Important
-
I check Search Console at least once a month
See which keywords send traffic, and optimise those pages further.
Recommended
-
I've analysed at least 1 competitor: which words do they rank for?
You don't have to reinvent the wheel, learn from what already works.
